Treatment
If abnormal cells are detected, there are a number of treatment options:
LLETZ or loop diathermy - a small electrical loop is used to remove a very small piece of tissue that contains the abnormal cells. The area is then cauterised and the patient is able to go home immediately after the procedure. This is the treatment of choice for more than 90% of patients requiring treatment for abnormal cells detected on a cervical smear.
Laser therapy is rarely performed today as it is a time consuming procedure and does not provide a biopsy specimen.
Cone biopsy - a technique reserved for the removal of a large area of the cervix which is affected by pre-cancerous changes of the cervix. Most commonly performed under general anaesthetic requiring no more than daycase care.
